In a recent address, Kamala Harris, the first woman and person of color to serve as Vice President, seemed to subtly critique the Trump administration while emphasizing the importance of resilience.
This speech, delivered at the 56th NAACP Image Awards, was Harris' first public appearance since her departure from office following the 2024 presidential election loss to Donald Trump.
According to Newsweek, Harris was honored with this year's Chairman's Award at the ceremony, held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California.
The audience greeted her with a standing ovation, underscoring her enduring influence despite her recent political setback. In her acceptance speech, Harris lauded the NAACP as a cornerstone of the Black community and encouraged Americans to remain steadfast during Trump's term.
Harris did not explicitly reference her electoral defeat or Trump's subsequent policies. However, she seemed to allude to Trump and his top adviser, Elon Musk, stating, "This chapter will be written, not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office, nor by the wealthiest among us." She continued, "The American story will be written by you, written by us, by We the People."
Harris' speech also addressed the challenges facing the nation, as reported by The Associated Press. She said, "Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy and ask, 'What do we do now?'" She responded to this rhetorical question with a call to action, asserting, "But we know exactly what to do, because we have done it before. And we will do it again. We use our power. We organize, mobilize. We educate. We advocate. Our power has never come from having an easy path."
Earlier that day, Trump had taken a jab at Harris and former President Joe Biden at the Conservative Political Action Conference, even mispronouncing Harris' first name. In contrast, Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, shared a supportive post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, praising his wife's "AMAZING speech" at the NAACP Image Awards.
Harris' speech resonated with many, including Harryjsisson, a 22-year-old Democrat with a substantial social media following. He echoed Harris' words in a post on X, writing, "Kamala Harris offered a much-needed reminder at the NAACP Image Awards tonight. 'This chapter will be written, not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office, nor by the wealthiest among us. The American story will be written by you.' Amazing."
