In a recent White House press briefing, President Donald Trump lent his support to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's contentious remarks regarding Ukraine's potential NATO membership.
The comments, which have sparked considerable debate, suggest that Ukraine joining NATO would not be a component of the ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict with Russia.
During the press conference, CNN's Kaitlan Collins questioned Trump about the backlash Hegseth faced following his statements. Hegseth had clarified, "I want to be clear about something as it pertains to NATO membership not being realistic outcome for negotiations. Thats something that was stated as part of my remarks here, as part of the coordination with how were executing these ongoing negotiations." According to Mediaite, Trump later described Hegseth's comments as "pretty accurate," expressing skepticism about Ukraine's prospects of joining NATO.
The exchange between Collins and Trump unfolded as follows:
KAITLAN COLLINS: Did you ask Secretary Hegseth to walk back his comments yesterday saying Ukraine wont join NATO, it wont go back to pre-2014 borders because those are bargaining chips you could use?
DONALD TRUMP: No, I didnt. Somebody told me he did, but I thought his comments were good yesterday, and theyre probably good today. Theyre a little bit softer perhaps, but I thought his comments yesterday were pretty accurate. I dont see any way that a country in Russias position just in their position could allow them to join NATO. I dont see that happening. And long before President Putin, Russia was very strong on the fact that I believe that is the reason the war started, because Biden went out and said they could join NATO and he shouldnt have said that. As soon as he said that, I said know, you know what? You are going to have a war now, and I was right about that. This is a war that wouldve never happened if I were president.
COLLINS: You think its President Bidens fault, not President Putin. I mean, hes the one
TRUMP: I think Biden is incompetent. And I think when he said they could join NATO, I thought that was a very stupid thing to say. I thought when he said, well, it depends if it is a minor incursion. In other words, its okay if Russia does a minor incursion. I thought that was a very foolish thing to say.
Trump's remarks underscore a conservative perspective that attributes the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict to President Joe Biden's foreign policy decisions. He argued that Biden's suggestion of Ukraine joining NATO was a catalyst for the war, a situation he claims would have been avoided under his leadership. Trump's critique of Biden's handling of the situation reflects a broader conservative critique of the current administration's foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of strategic communication and diplomacy in international relations. As the conflict continues, the debate over NATO's role and the United States' foreign policy approach remains a pivotal issue in the discourse surrounding the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war.
