In the aftermath of a tragic aviation accident over the Potomac River, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has responded to accusations leveled by President Donald Trump.
The incident, involving a collision between an American Airlines plane and a Blackhawk helicopter, has left 67 individuals feared dead. During a press conference on Thursday, President Trump attributed the disaster to the Biden administration's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hiring practices.
As reported by Mediaite, Trump did not shy away from directly criticizing Buttigieg, accusing him of having led the Department of Transportation into disarray with what he termed as "bullshit." In a swift rebuttal, Buttigieg took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to express his disapproval of Trump's comments. "Despicable. As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying," Buttigieg asserted, emphasizing the safety measures implemented during his tenure, which included reducing near-misses, expanding Air Traffic Control, and achieving zero fatalities in commercial airline crashes across millions of flights.
Buttigieg further highlighted the current administration's responsibilities, pointing out that President Trump now oversees both the military and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He criticized Trump's decision to dismiss and suspend key personnel who were instrumental in maintaining aviation safety. Buttigieg urged the president to demonstrate genuine leadership by outlining concrete steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The call for accountability and leadership underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and competence in governmental roles, particularly those impacting public welfare.
