Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has already begun to challenge House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) with her outspoken criticism.
Greene took to X to express her dissatisfaction with the recent Republican retreat held at former President Donald Trump's Doral, Florida resort, claiming that the gathering yielded little progress.
According to Raw Story, Greene voiced her frustration, stating, "After two days at our House Republican winter retreat, we still do not have a plan on budget reconciliation and our Speaker and his team have not offered one." She further noted the lack of clarity on whether the party would pursue a single or dual-bill approach, despite Trump's input. "Not even if we are in a one bill or two bill framework, even though President Trump (who prefers one big beautiful bill) literally told us here at the start of our conference that he now does not care if its one or two," she remarked.
Greene criticized the retreat for failing to produce any new substantive ideas, reiterating that the same policy and budget cut proposals had been presented repeatedly. "We have only been presented with the same policy and budget cut proposals that we have been presented with for a month now at all our meetings and at a full Saturday conference meeting earlier this month," she wrote. Her metaphor, "I would say sink or swim, but our country is already sinking, so we MUST swim," underscored her urgency for action.
She also lauded Trump's executive orders, which included pardons for individuals involved in the Capitol riot, and emphasized the need for Congress to contribute more effectively. Greene expressed her hope for a clear plan in future meetings, cautioning against the recurrence of last-minute, voluminous bills. "Next time we meet, I hope to know a framework of our plan and I hope this doesnt turn into another bill with thousands of pages dumped on us with less than 72 hours to read it all before we have to vote on the eve of another government shutdown," she concluded. "But why would I expect different?"
