New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has once again voiced her concerns about the imminent threat of fascism in the United States.
During a recent Instagram Live session, she cautioned her followers, stating, "we are in the eve of an authoritarian administration..
She further elaborated on her views, stating, This is what 21st-century fascism is starting to look like. Republicans really model themselves after [Victor] Orbans Hungary, so you can really look to see how Orban runs Hungary to get a taste of how they will try to govern and control media and companies in the United States. This is kind of an entree to that."
According to The Post Millennial, Ocasio-Cortez also discussed the role of social media platforms in progressive organization, suggesting alternatives such as BlueSky. She said, As far as what we do, you know, this is a time of experimentation. A lot of people will still use platforms, but I also look towards places where you have more ownership as well and develop your audiences there, Bluesky, you own your audience there.
Ocasio-Cortez has a history of raising alarms about the rise of fascism in the United States. She has been particularly critical of GOP politicians and right-wing figures, including tech mogul Elon Musk. In a previous exchange on social media, she advised Musk to "lay off the proto-fascism," adding, "You're a public figure. An extremely controversial and powerful one. I get feeling unsafe, but descending into abuse of power + erratically banning journalists only increases the intensity around you. Take a beat and lay off the proto-fascism. Maybe try putting down your phone."
The New York congresswoman has also expressed her concerns about the potential return of former President Trump. "We've all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency," Ocasio-Cortez said, "If you're a 'senior Democrat' that feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make space for true leadership that refuses to resign themselves to fascism."
In 2022, Ocasio-Cortez warned that the US was entering an environment of fascism ahead of the midterms. She stated, "It brings us back and harkens back to a very unique form of American apartheid that is not that long past ago. And we have never fully healed from it and those wounds threaten to rip right back open if we do not strongly defend democracy in the United States of America.
Ocasio-Cortez has also criticized the Republican parents rights bill, labeling it fascist during a speech on the House floor. This bill was designed to give parents more control over their children's education. Her repeated warnings and criticisms underscore her commitment to combating what she perceives as a rising tide of authoritarianism in the United States.
