Former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz has hinted at the possibility of running for the state's governorship in 2026.

Gaetz, who transitioned from Congress to television hosting, shared his thoughts during an interview with the Tampa Bay Times. His primary focus, he revealed, would be addressing the insurance crisis that has plagued the state.

According to The Hill, Gaetz expressed confidence in his ability to rectify the insurance issue, stating, I have a compelling vision for the state. I understand how to fix the insurance problem, and its not to hand the keys to the state over to the insurance industry. He further asserted that his candidacy would be the most pro-consumer on the Republican side.

Gaetz, however, is yet to make a final decision, stating that he needs more time for prayer and discussions with his wife. His contemplation of a gubernatorial run follows his resignation from Congress, which occurred shortly after he was nominated to serve as President-elect Trump's attorney general. Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration amidst an ethics investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use.

Despite his departure from Congress, the House Ethics Committee released a report detailing the findings of their three-and-a-half-year investigation into Gaetz. The report presented "substantial evidence" of Gaetz violating House rules, and state and federal laws, with allegations ranging from prostitution to statutory rape and illicit drug use. Gaetz, however, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In response to the report, Gaetz maintained his resilience, stating to the Tampa Bay Times that he does not see the findings as a barrier to his potential return to public office. "Those lies have been told about me for years," he said. "Theyve never affected my ability to win elections." This statement encapsulates Gaetz's unwavering confidence in his political future, despite the controversies that have marked his past.
