In a recent interview, Alejandro Mayorkas, the current Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), confirmed that he has had extensive discussions with South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, President-elect Trump's nominee for his position.
Mayorkas expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition, should Noem be confirmed by the Senate.
According to The Hill, Mayorkas stated, "I have spoken with Gov. Noem a number of times, including on New Years Day and immediately thereafter, with respect to the horrific terrorist attack." This was in reference to the recent tragedy in New Orleans, where a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in 14 fatalities and numerous injuries.
Mayorkas further elaborated on their discussions, stating, "We have spoken substantively about the measures that we take, and I am incredibly devoted to a smooth and successful transition to the success of Gov. Noem, should she be confirmed as the secretary of Homeland Security." He also expressed appreciation for Noem's focus on the issues they discussed.
Governor Noem's nomination follows her consideration as Trump's potential running mate and her year-long focus on immigration. She has demonstrated her commitment to this issue by deploying South Dakota National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border and supporting Trump's comprehensive immigration plans.
The nomination of Noem is indicative of Trump's intention to adopt a firm stance on immigration policy, including the implementation of the mass deportation plan he campaigned on. This move aligns with conservative values of limited government and individual freedom, as it seeks to enforce immigration laws and protect national security.
