In a recent revelation by PolitiFact, an entity that prides itself on being an impartial adjudicator of truth in politics, the most egregious falsehood of 2024, in a year rife with competition, was attributed to Donald Trump.
The former President had allegedly claimed that domestic pets were being consumed by Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. However, it seems there was a far more significant deception that year.
On June 27th, a presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump took place, a pivotal event that not only altered the nation's trajectory but also unveiled the most substantial deception of the century. The claim that Biden, in his eighties, was in the prime of his health was exposed as a fallacy.
The nation watched in disbelief as their President, appearing drained and struggling to articulate his thoughts, shattered years of assertions about his mental acuity. Despite attempts to conceal Biden's deteriorating condition, there were indications of his decline. Yet, the White House insisted that behind closed doors, Biden exhibited the vitality of a young man, even reciting Aquinas' proofs of God in Latin while performing physical exercises.
This fabrication about Biden's health will undoubtedly find its place on the Mount Rushmore of political lies, nestled between Richard Nixon's infamous "I am not a crook," and Bill Clinton's denial of his affair, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
In February, following an incident where Biden claimed to have recently conversed with the late French President Francois Mitterand, Fox News' Peter Doocy questioned Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about Biden's mental fitness. The exchange went as follows:
"Im not even going to go down that rabbit hole with you, sir," KJP retorted.
"Why is it a rabbit hole?!" Doocy queried.
"You saw the president in Vegas, in California," Jean-Pierre responded. "Youve seen the president in South Carolina. You saw him in Michigan. Ill just leave it there."
Jean-Pierre not only misrepresented Biden's mental state but also insinuated that anyone questioning it was indulging in conspiracy theories. Even when Biden was caught on camera struggling, the White House dismissed these instances as "cheapfakes," despite the footage being unaltered.
However, PolitiFact chose to ignore the White House's blatant deception about Biden's capacity to serve and instead declared Trump's claims about migrants in Springfield as the top lie.
Firstly, it is not definitively established that the reports of Haitian migrants consuming pets in Ohio are false. In September, I visited Springfield and spoke to several individuals who had heard these accounts and found them credible.
Even if these accounts are fabricated, Trump's intention was to highlight the genuine crisis caused by the resettlement of 15,000 migrants in a city of 60,000 residents within two years. The citizens expressed their concerns about overcrowded schools, skyrocketing rents, and compromised public safety. Even if Trump erred in the details about the pets, he was drawing attention to a real issue.
In contrast, the harmful lies concealing the true state of the nation's leader served no one's interests except Biden's and his deceitful entourage.
Politico might argue that Trump was promoting harmful, racially charged attacks against migrants by highlighting the struggles of Springfield's residents. However, during my visit to Springfield, I encountered no racism or threats against migrants. Instead, I found palpable anger directed at the Biden administration and local government, whom the residents believed had sacrificed their city.
In the end, Biden's monumental lie backfired, resulting in a disgraceful end to his single term as President. Meanwhile, Trump, rejuvenated by his convincing victory in November, is prepared to assist the beleaguered citizens of Springfield, whether that involves protecting pets or not.
Regrettably for PolitiFact, a year from now, the Springfield pets will be forgotten, but a century later, students will still be learning about the absent President in their history lessons. For Joseph Robinette Biden, the 46th President of the United States, this monumental lie will be his enduring legacy.
