In a surprising move, Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) has declared that she will not accept committee assignments in the House, choosing instead to focus her efforts on supporting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
She has also stated her intention to abstain from weekly GOP meetings.
According to RedState, Spartz made her intentions clear in a statement, saying, "I will stay as a registered Republican but will not sit on committees or participate in the caucus until I see that Republican leadership in Congress is governing." This unexpected decision has sent ripples through the political landscape. Spartz further explained her stance, stating, "I do not need to be involved in circuses. I would rather spend more of my time helping [DOGE] to save our Republic, as was mandated by the American people."
On Tuesday morning, Spartz issued a press release that reiterated her sentiments and included a stern warning to Congress. She expressed her concern about the country's fiscal trajectory and the need for courageous and structural changes in Congress. She stated, This election the American people sent a resounding message and mandate to the Republican party to govern - not deliver talking points and messaging bills. Our country is on a fiscal collision course and it will take some courage and structural changes in Congress to challenge the status quo, which is not happening."
Spartz, who identifies herself as a serious legislator and finance professional, expressed her desire to distance herself from what she termed as "circuses". She stated her intention to focus her energy on assisting President Trump, his appointees, and DOGE in delivering on their promises through reconciliation. She also emphasized her commitment to working hard for the people she represents.
Spartz warned that if not drained through the law, "the swamp will be back in business in four years." She urged Congress not to fail President Trump and the American people again.
During the 118th Congress, Spartz has been known to challenge House GOP leadership, particularly on issues of government spending and the national debt. She is currently a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
Born in Ukraine, Spartz has faced criticism from the Lindsey Graham wing of the GOP for her critique of Volodymyr Zelensky. There is widespread concern within the House GOP Conference that her stance could potentially harm U.S.-Ukraine relations. Critics argue that she may be unwittingly serving forces that aim to weaken the Western alliance.
Spartz has advocated for better oversight of U.S. weaponry flowing into Ukraine, a topic that has garnered bipartisan attention. However, she has also accused Zelensky of "playing politics" and not "understanding" the seriousness of the conflict. She has further criticized his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, alleging that he is under Russian influence.
The future course of action for Spartz remains uncertain as the DOGE committee, which will be overseen by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, is a newly formed entity. Ron Paul has previously expressed his willingness to assist DOGE in identifying potential budgetary cuts to the federal government.
