In a recent interview with NBC News, President-elect Donald Trump expressed his belief that his proposed tariff plan would not result in increased consumer prices for American families.
However, he refrained from making any guarantees. "I can't guarantee anything," Trump stated, "I can't guarantee tomorrow."
According to Business Insider, Trump recalled that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, he had imposed tariffs on numerous countries. "We took in hundreds of billions of dollars and we had no inflation," he asserted, adding, "In fact, when I handed it over, they didn't have inflation for a year and a half."
In November, Trump proposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, China, and Mexico, the United States' top three trading partners. He has been critical of what he perceives as an unchecked influx of drugs and illegal immigrants from these countries. Additionally, Trump has threatened economic sanctions against the BRICS group, a coalition of nine emerging market countries, warning of "100% tariffs" should they attempt to "move away" from the US dollar.
Trump, a self-proclaimed "big believer in tariffs," described them as "beautiful" during his NBC interview. He argued that the United States is effectively subsidizing Canada and Mexico. "If we're going to subsidize them, let them become a state," he proposed. "We're subsidizing Mexico, and we're subsidizing Canada, and we're subsidizing many countries all over the world. And all I want to do is have a level, fast, but fair playing field."
Following Trump's tariff threats, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Mar-a-Lago for a dinner meeting with Trump. Trudeau described their conversation as "excellent." Similarly, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum characterized her recent discussion with Trump as "excellent," noting that they discussed her country's migration plans.
The economy was a pivotal issue in the November election, with Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris largely attributed to dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden's handling of inflation. Despite Harris's attempts to outline her economic strategy focusing on price gouging and addressing housing affordability she was unable to counteract Trump's advantage on the issue.
Trump's focus on inflation resonated with many working-class voters and minority groups across the United States, enabling him to erode traditional Democratic advantages. This shift in voter sentiment underscores the importance of economic stability and the potential impact of Trump's proposed tariff plan on the American economy.
