In a recent development, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has accused former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) of duping President-elect Donald Trump into nominating him for the position of attorney general.

McCarthy alleges that this was a strategic move by Gaetz to step down from Congress before an impending ethics investigation could reveal his purported involvement in sex crimes.

As reported by Raw Story, McCarthy's comments came during a Sunday interview on Fox News. The host, Maria Bartiromo, sought McCarthy's response to Gaetz's sudden withdrawal as the nominee for attorney general. This unexpected move followed reports that the House Ethics Committee had received testimony alleging that Gaetz had engaged in sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl.

McCarthy did not mince words, stating, "I blame Matt Gaetz for lying to the [president-elect] about his ethics report." He further suggested that Gaetz had attempted to remove him from his position as Speaker due to the impending ethics report.

McCarthy argued that Gaetz's actions were a clear indication of his inability to continue serving in Congress. He said, "People know that's why he's not capable of even staying in Congress. He needed an excuse to resign because the ethics report would be done in a couple days."

Despite the controversy surrounding Gaetz's departure, McCarthy expressed optimism about the future of Congress. He stated, "But it's a better Congress today of where they're going forward."
