In the wake of a meeting with DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, House Speaker Mike Johnson has underscored the urgency of returning federal employees to their offices.
This comes in response to a startling revelation that most federal buildings remain vacant, with a significant number of workers yet to resume their duties following the COVID-19 pandemic.
As reported by Sean Hannity, Johnson expressed his expectations for the new administration and Congress, stating, One of the first things that I think youll see is a demand from the new administration and from all of us in Congress that federal workers return to their desks and get back to the work that theyre supposed to be doing. I think that is common sense.
Johnson further emphasized the need for a return to accountability and efficiency in government, a move he believes will greatly benefit the American people. He added, What youre going to see here the overriding theme here is a return to common sense and a return to accountability and efficiency in government. I think thats going to serve the people well. Therell be a lot therell be a lot more to tell you all in the days ahead.
The Speaker also drew attention to a recent report that revealed the shockingly low number of federal employees currently working in their offices. He said, There was a report that came out today. I dont know if you all have seen it, but someone did a little survey of how many federal employees are actually working in the office. By one estimate, it may be about 1% if you dont count the security personnel that are covering these buildings. That is absurd, and its not something the American people would stand for.
Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur, also weighed in on the issue, echoing the Speaker's sentiments. He stated, If you exclude security guards & maintenance personnel, the number of government workers who show up in person and do 40 hours of work a week is closer to 1%! Almost no one. This shared concern underscores the need for a swift and effective response to ensure the return of federal workers to their offices, thereby restoring efficiency and accountability in government operations.
