Uh Oh! AOC Has Her Eyes Set On A New Position!

In a potential reshuffling of power within the House of Representatives, Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat known for his fervent partisan stance, is vying to replace Jerry Nadler on the Judiciary Committee.

This move could significantly alter the dynamics within the House, despite the likelihood of it having minimal impact on the actual outcomes of committee votes, given the equally partisan nature of both Raskin and Nadler.

According to Hot Air, if Raskin's bid is successful, it would leave a vacancy for the position of Ranking Member on the House Oversight committee, a coveted role that is likely to attract a host of ambitious contenders within the House. Among the potential candidates is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a figure who has carved out a reputation as a progressive firebrand within her caucus. Her potential bid, however, is likely to polarize opinions, with Republicans viewing her as having a somewhat naive understanding of politics.

Ocasio-Cortez's potential ascension to the top Democrat position on the Oversight Committee would mark a significant test of her influence. The current holder of the position, Raskin, is challenging Nadler for the top Democratic spot on the Judiciary Committee. If Raskin manages to unseat Nadler, it would trigger a scramble for his replacement.

While Democrats are hesitant to publicly discuss an Oversight bid before the Judiciary challenges are settled, lawmakers are privately making calls to gauge support, subtly maneuvering behind the scenes. Other possible contenders for the top spot include Representatives Gerry Connolly, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Ro Khanna.

Connolly, the representative from Fairfax Co, Virginia, is seen as a cheerleader for wasteful spending and unconstitutional abuse of power, as long as it benefits Democrats or his own allies. He is perceived as the quintessential Establishment Democrat, whose primary objective would be to ensure minimal disruption, making him a staunch opponent of Trump.

Krishnamoorthi, on the other hand, is relatively unknown, with his Indian heritage and his opposition to Raj Patel's efforts to reform the FBI being the only known factors about him. Khanna, however, is seen as a potentially excellent addition to the Oversight Committee. Despite his progressive leanings, he is known for his straightforward approach and his willingness to oppose power abuses by either Democrats or Republicans.

Ocasio-Cortez's potential bid is seen as a power play, a test of her ability to mobilize the progressive wing of the House Caucus to displace the older guard. Despite her lack of finesse in national electoral politics, she may possess a knack for internal politics, similar to Nancy Pelosi's. However, it remains unclear whether she could ride a wave of generational change or face turbulence in the Steering and Policy Committee, a leadership-appointed panel that decides most committee positions.

If Ocasio-Cortez does mount a bid and secures her caucus support, it could represent the ultimate inside power play for the outspoken progressive, who first came to office by primarying a powerful committee chair in 2018. This would come less than two years after Raskin and Oversight Committee Democrats gave her the vice ranking member position, a move that gave her a high-profile perch amid concerns that Raskin could be absent during his cancer treatments at the time.

Ocasio-Cortez has often been at odds with the previous generation of House leaders and has used her powerful platform to express skepticism of Democratic leadership. Her viral moments, while appealing to progressives, do not necessarily serve the interests of the Democratic Party when it comes to winning elections. Few swing voters are persuaded by her antics, and she lacks the slickness of someone like Raskin, who is a lawyer.

However, Ocasio-Cortez is positioning herself as the future of the party, and in the wake of Harris' defeat, those who believe that Harris' loss was due to aligning with NeverTrumper Liz Cheney are gravitating towards her. It could be that enough Democrats in the House buy that argument to give Ocasio-Cortez a leg up.

The Establishment is likely to gravitate towards Gerry Connolly, but after the last election and Nancy Pelosi stepping down as Minority Leader, Ocasio-Cortez may yet have a shot. If she does, it will be a signal regarding which direction House Democrats will take. Either they will stick with establishment leadership or chart a new, even more progressive path.
