In a recent development, Vice President Kamala Harris has appointed Camila Thorndike, a fervent advocate for radical climate change policies, as her new "Climate Engagement Director."
Thorndike, who has previously held senior roles at the climate change nonprofit Rewiring America, has been known for her unconventional views on climate change, including her expressed reluctance to have children due to concerns about the planet's future.
According to The Post Millennial, Thorndike announced her new role on Linkedin, stating, "Hello from official day one at Harris-Walz HQ! It's an honor to help the movements I love elect our future climate champion-in-chief." She has also referred to herself as a climate hype girl for democracy on the same platform.
In a 2022 interview with the Washington Post, Thorndike expressed her apprehension about starting a family due to the impending challenges of climate change, a sentiment that Harris has also previously echoed. "Its coming partly from a place of love for my hypothetical child, Thorndike explained. I want to protect them from suffering. Not that life is ever free from suffering, but what of the joys and peace and goodness that make me happiest to be alive will be accessible in 20, 30, 40 years?
Thorndike further elaborated on her evolving perspective, stating, My perspective has changed so many times over the last 20 years. Its a decision that no one can make for another person. And I allow myself the space for that uncertainty."
Thorndike's former employer, Rewiring America, has been a staunch advocate for initiatives such as banning gas-powered stovetops. As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, the groups mission is to "help mobilize America to address climate change and jump-start the economy by electrifying everything." The organization has been pushing for sweeping policies to transition the US away from fossil fuels. It gained further attention when it hired Stacey Abrams as Senior Counsel following her loss in the Georgia gubernatorial race. Abrams expressed her pleasure to join the group to share the benefits of electrification and ensure families get their fair share."
The appointment of Thorndike, given her radical climate change beliefs, could be seen as contradictory to Harris' recent attempts to moderate her stance on certain energy initiatives, such as fracking. During her 2020 presidential campaign, Harris was vocal about her support for a ban on fracking. However, she has since attempted to retract this position. This comes at a time when gas prices have surged by 50 percent under the Biden-Harris administration, and Harris has also backtracked on the administration's efforts to establish an EV mandate.
This appointment raises questions about the Biden-Harris administration's commitment to traditional energy sources and the potential impact on American families, who are already grappling with rising energy costs. It also underscores the need for a balanced approach to climate change that respects individual freedoms and market principles.
