In a recent development that has sparked concern among conservatives, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala has been accused of adopting a false American identity and casting votes in several elections.
This incident has reignited the debate within the GOP over the issue of non-citizens participating in federal elections.
As reported by The Post Millennial, the United States Attorneys Office in northern Alabama issued a news release stating that Angelica Maria Francisco, a 42-year-old illegal immigrant, "has been charged in connection with her fraudulent assumption of a United States citizens identity and her use of that identity to vote in multiple elections and obtain multiple United States passports.
Residing in Russellville, Alabama, Francisco faces charges including "false claims of citizenship in connection with voting, false statements in application for a United States passport, use of a United States passport obtained by false statements, and aggravated identity theft." The release further discloses that Francisco has consented to a plea agreement, indicating her intention to plead guilty to all charges.
The attorney's office alleges that Francisco began impersonating a U.S. citizen around 2011. "Francisco used the false identity to obtain a United States passport in 2011. She subsequently used the United States passport to travel to and from her native country of Guatemala in 2012, 2015, and 2018," the release elaborated.
Furthermore, Francisco is accused of registering to vote in Alabama in 2016 and casting her vote in the 2016 and 2020 primary and general elections. "And in 2021, Francisco used the same false identity to apply for and receive a renewed passport, which she used to travel to and from Guatemala in 2022, the news release added.
This case is not an isolated incident. There have been other instances of non-citizens registering to vote or voting in U.S. elections, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. Recent polling data suggests that a majority of U.S. voters believe that illegal immigrants are likely to vote in the 2024 election. This perception underscores the need for stringent measures to safeguard the sanctity of the democratic process and ensure that only eligible citizens exercise their right to vote.
