In a tragic twist of fate, a man who miraculously survived a 244-day coma following a severe motorcycle accident was killed seven years and one week later in a truck collision.
Drew Kohn, who was just shy of his 23rd birthday when he experienced the initial accident in Jacksonville, Florida in July 2017, was pronounced dead at the scene of his second accident, just days before his 30th birthday.
According to The Independent, Kohn's first accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury, impaled lungs, and multiple fractures including his shoulder, pelvis, and ribs. The severity of his injuries led doctors to believe he was brain dead and would never regain his ability to walk or talk. However, a GoFundMe page set up in his honor tells a different story: "Through faith and the power of prayer, he emerged from a coma after 244 days and lived life to the fullest."
Kohn's mother, Yolanda Osborne-Kohn, recalled the doctors' initial prognosis: "They would have harvested his organs." She credits her faith for giving her the courage to resist this course of action, telling First Coast News, "It was because of my faith that gave me the boldness to speak up and push back and let them know 'youre not getting a toenail or an eyelash.'"
When Kohn finally awoke from his coma, his first words to his mother were a testament to his resilience: "Yeah mom, Im OK. I love you, mom."
However, on July 26, 2024, Kohn's life was tragically cut short when he was struck by a pickup truck while walking at 5.30 am in Jacksonville. The driver of the truck reportedly stopped immediately and called 911, but it was too late for Kohn.
The Independent has reached out to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office for further information regarding the incident.
Despite their grief, Kohn's family and friends find solace in his legacy. The GoFundMe page states, "While we miss him more than words can express, we are at peace knowing he is finally home." Kohn was passionate about helping others struggling with trauma and traumatic brain injuries, always offering them hope.
The GoFundMe fundraiser, set up to cover Kohn's funeral and accumulated medical expenses, has already raised nearly $12,000. This outpouring of support is a testament to the impact Kohn had on those around him, even as his own life was marked by unimaginable hardship and, ultimately, tragedy.
