Renowned actor Rob Schneider has publicly declared his disengagement from the 2024 Summer Olympics, following a drag performance during the opening ceremony that many believe mocked the Last Supper.
Schneider expressed his deep disappointment and stated his refusal to watch the globally anticipated athletic event.
According to the Daily Caller, Schneider took to Twitter on July 28 to voice his disapproval. "I am sorry to say to ALL the worlds GREATEST ATHLETES, I wish you ALL THE BEST, but I cannot watch an Olympics that disrespects Christianity and openly celebrates Satan," he wrote. "I sincerely hope THESE @Olympics get the same amount of viewers as @cspan."
The opening ceremony's controversial performance bore a striking resemblance to Leonardo da Vincis renowned painting of the Last Supper. French actor Philippe Katerine, painted blue and scantily clad in flowers, portrayed the Greek god Dionysus. The event took an unexpected turn when it morphed into a fashion show-cum-dance performance, featuring "Drag Race France" host Nicky Doll and drag contestants Paloma and Piche.
The performance ignited immediate criticism from conservative and Christian communities, with Schneider among the high-profile figures condemning the act. The actor further expressed his outrage in another tweet, stating, Guys with their genitalia hanging out in front of children?! Drag Queens?! I wasnt sure if I was watching the @Olympics or if I was watching a school board meeting
The Olympics organizers defended the performance, stating, The interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings. However, in the wake of the backlash, videos of the performance were removed from the Olympics official YouTube channel.
Schneider was not alone in his criticism. Other celebrities, including Candace Cameron Bure and Jillian Michaels, also voiced their distaste for the performance. This incident underscores the tension between traditional values and the progressive elements in contemporary society, a conflict that continues to shape public discourse and influence cultural events such as the Olympics.
