In a recent Substack post by Seymour Hersch, published by The Post Millennial, it is suggested that former President Barack Obama and current Vice President Kamala Harris threatened President Joe Biden with the potential invocation of the 25th Amendment.
This was allegedly to force him to withdraw from the presidential race and allow Harris to take his place. Hersch's report implies that the Democrats are aware of Biden's inability to complete his term but are willing to maintain him as a figurehead to preserve the party's power.
The situation escalated following a debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump, the GOP nominee, on June 27. The debate's outcome was so unfavorable that Democrat leaders and pundits immediately began seeking ways to remove Biden from the ticket. Hersch alleges that behind the scenes, a coup was underway, led by the Obama-Harris team.
Hersch quotes an anonymous official, stating, "By Saturday, July 20, former President Barack Obama was deeply involved, and there was talk that he would place a call to Biden." The official continued, "'On Sunday morning,' the official told me, with the approval of Pelosi and Schumer, 'Obama called Biden after breakfast and said, Heres the deal. We have Kamalas approval to invoke the 25th Amendment.'"
The 25th Amendment allows for the vice president to assume presidential duties if the president is deemed unfit to carry out his office's powers and duties. Hersch's source also indicated that Obama was not going to immediately endorse Harris, but the group had decided that her prosecutorial experience would be beneficial in a debate against Trump.
On July 26, both Barack and Michelle Obama endorsed Harris. Hersch's source, an experienced fundraiser, stated that Obama emerged as the strongman throughout the negotiations, seeking control over the election outcome.
Rumors had circulated that Pelosi and Schumer wanted Biden out, and that Obama had given actor George Clooney permission to write an op-ed in The New York Times calling for Biden to step aside. Once Biden's withdrawal letter was posted, party leadership praised his "selfless" decision and Harris' nomination. However, Hersch's report suggests that Biden's decision was not selfless, but rather forced, and that Harris' candidacy was not grassroots-driven, as claimed by Jeffries and Schumer, but orchestrated by top party brass. To date, Harris has not received a single vote.
