Presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expressed his belief that Joe Biden has tarnished his own reputation by not withdrawing from the presidential race in a timely manner.
This comes in the wake of Biden's recent decision to step down from the race, succumbing to party pressure, and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the subsequent Democratic candidate. Kennedy, a third-party contender, held a press conference shortly after Biden's announcement, arguing that there would be no discernible difference between Biden and his Vice President, who seems set to take over the Democratic ticket.
According to The Independent, Kennedy shared his views with CBS News, stating that Biden's decision to withdraw should have been made earlier. "Ive known Joe Biden for 40 years, and I commend him and respect him for the 50 years that he gave in service to our country, but I think he tarred that reputation and that career over the past year by refusing to let go of power, Kennedy told CBS News on Thursday.
Kennedy also took issue with Biden's speech from the Oval Office on Wednesday, where the President elaborated on his decision to step down. "Its been the honor of my life to serve as your President, Biden told the nation. But in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think its more important than any title. Kennedy, however, criticized the speech, telling CBS News it was more of a statement about what his accomplishments were, rather than a reassurance to the American public about where we are today.
Kennedy, the independent candidate, is reportedly considering endorsing former President Donald Trump. The Washington Post reports that Kennedy recently reached out to Trump to discuss the possibility of withdrawing from the race and endorsing the former President. During the call, Kennedy also suggested a potential role in Trump's White House, according to sources familiar with the conversation.
Biden's decision to step down has been met with praise from several of his Democratic colleagues. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer lauded Biden as a great President, legislative leader, and human being, stating that Biden "once again put his country, his party, and our future first. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer echoed Schumer's sentiments, calling Biden a great public servant who understands what it takes to defeat Donald Trump.
On the other hand, numerous Republicans have called for Biden's resignation from the presidency following his withdrawal from the race. House Speaker Mike Johnson argued, If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President, adding that Biden "must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough. House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik echoed Johnson's sentiments, stating, If Joe Biden cant run for re-election, he is unable and unfit to continue serving as President of the United States.
