In a perplexing turn of events, the Democratic Party's narrative surrounding President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race has shifted from mildly amusing to downright preposterous.
This change in tone could be attributed to a sense of guilt or a lingering loyalty towards Biden, but the absurdity of the situation is undeniable.
According to RedState, key figures within the Democratic Party, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Representative Ted Lieu (D-CA), and members of the Biden administration, have been painting a picture of Biden as a "selfless" leader. They have even gone so far as to liken him to George Washington, the first President of the United States, in an attempt to frame his withdrawal in a positive light.
Representative Ted Lieu, the vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus, told reporters, "Biden is going to go down in history as one of the best presidents America has ever had." This statement marked a stark departure from the party's previous rhetoric against the President. Lieu further stated, "His selfless act this weekend reminds me of what George Washington did when he voluntarily gave up reelection and put country first."
House Democratic Caucus chair Pete Aguilar also praised Biden, stating, "Future generations, men and women, will remember that Joseph Robinette Biden served as the beacon of hope throughout the world to ensure that we put patriotism first."
However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis offered a contrasting perspective during a Fox News segment. He argued that Biden was forced out by the corporate media, Democratic megadonors, and top leaders within his own party. DeSantis stated, "This notion that the media is trying to peddle that [Biden] is like George Washington refusing power for the good of the countryhe had no choice! They were knifing him in the back! The New York Times was going after him, the big donors were going after him [L]ook with Democrats; the corporate media is a huge part of their party. When you lose the media, you are really a dead candidate walking. He had no other choice. This is not George Washington."
DeSantis' comments echo the sentiments of other top Republicans who have suggested that the Democratic Party orchestrated Biden's exit from the race, with some even going so far as to label it a palace coup.
The comparison to George Washington is presumably an attempt to preserve Biden's legacy. This theory aligns with reports that First Lady Jill Biden was concerned about the "defining image" of Biden's presidency being his lackluster debate performance against Donald Trump. However, this concern seems misplaced, as more damaging images of Biden have since emerged, most notably those highlighting his frailty and apparent ill health.
In her efforts to maintain Biden's "patriotic" political legacy, Jill Biden may have inadvertently exacerbated the problem. This is particularly ironic given her significant role in supporting Biden and portraying him as mentally sharp and ready to lead, despite clear indications to the contrary. The unfolding of these events serves as a stark reminder of the political maneuvering that often takes place behind the scenes, and the lengths to which parties will go to protect their image and legacy.
