Desperate Houston Small Business Owners Will Stop At Nothing To Protect Their Business From Unprecedented Crime Wave
Small business owners across the nation are increasingly desperate to protect their stores from break-ins and robberies, with some even sleeping inside their stores and arming themselves with guns and bulletproof vests. Such is the case in Houston, Texas, where several bar owners have taken extreme measures to protect their businesses and livelihoods.
According to Fox News, one bar owner in Houston, who asked to remain anonymous, said that his bar had been broken into three times in the last six months. He sleeps inside the bar with a gun and a bulletproof vest in an effort to deter potential thieves. He is not alone, as another bar owner in the city has taken similar measures, sleeping in his store overnight and arming himself with a gun.
The bar owner told Fox News, Im not going to let them come in and take what I worked hard for. I worked hard for this, and Im not going to let them take it away from me.
In an article from KHOU 11 News, another bar owner in Houston, Nick Neff, said that he has had to take matters into his own hands to protect his business. Neff said he had installed extra security cameras, motion sensors, and extra locks, and he also has been sleeping in his bar to keep an eye on things.
Neff said, Its just a matter of being proactive and taking care of yourself. You cant depend on the police to do it. You have to do it yourself.
This is not to say that government should not have an important role in protecting small businesses, but individuals should also be empowered to take responsibility for their own safety and security. This is especially true at a time when small businesses are struggling to survive due to a local economic downturn, which some attribute to rising crime.
In addition to taking matters into their own hands, small business owners are also turning to crime prevention initiatives to reduce the chances of their businesses being targeted. Sgt. Hicks from the Houston Police Department said that parking lots at restaurants, gyms, and convenience stores are popular targets for auto burglaries. He suggested that businesses should replace traditional glass windows with security film and make break-ins difficult by installing security devices such as cameras, alarms and access control systems.
Non-retail enterprises should also take steps to protect their critical assets, such as computers, financial information, and personal property. Business owners should also ensure their property is hidden and secure and that their security devices are regularly maintained.
Marin Slanina, a Houston small business owner, spoke to Fox & Friends about how Houston small business owners are responding to crime in the city. She said that the business owners had come together as a unit to address the issue. This is a string of break-ins, she said. The lack of action from anybody has been the catalyst for all of us to get together.
The owners are also calling on the Houston Police Department to increase patrols and response times in the areas where break-ins have been occurring. They are also hoping for more action from law enforcement and judges to take the crimes more seriously.
In an increasingly dangerous world, small business owners are showing that they are willing and able to take responsibility for their own safety and security. It is a testament to the spirit of self-reliance that has always been a cornerstone of the American tradition.
